Mossel Bay Penguin Rehabilitation Centre
SAPREC Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre is a registered, non-profit organization, affiliated with Cape Nature as well as the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries. Their primary focus is to help seabirds, that includes the endangered African Penguin, endangered Cape Gannet, Cape Cormorant and also Petrels. Sick or injured seabirds are brought to the rehabilitation centre, where they are rehabilitated with the aim of releasing them again.
It’s a sobering reality that the endangered African Penguin is on the brink of extinction. According to Carol from SAPREC, only 14,000 African Penguins remain worldwide. Without urgent intervention, the species could be extinct by 2030.
Volunteer to help rescue Seabirds and Penguins in the Garden Route
Furthermore SAPREC, based in Mossdustria, Mossel Bay, serves the area from Still Bay to Sedgefield. They rely heavily on the public as well as on rangers to report and bring in stranded seabirds and penguins. There are many ways to get involved and also support their vital work
Penguin Feedings Mossel Bay
Here at SAPREC Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre you can visit them daily for feeding. A small entrance fee is charged to assist the centre with resources to keep doing their excellent work. Viewing is by appointment only, contact Carol to book on 082 364 3382.
